Zero-Layout-Shift Pill Navigators in React 19 & Framer Motion
SEP 2026•5 MIN READ•Studio Engineering
Creating a unified navigation bar with an animated floating indicator seems simple until server components and dynamic routing cause layout thrashing. When the active route changes, the pill must smoothly transition without measuring the DOM in an uncontrolled manner.
We implement layout projection using hardware-accelerated transforms (translate3d) coupled with SSR-safe initial coordinates. By separating layout measurement from rendering cycles, transitions execute with zero cumulative layout shift (CLS: 0.00).
